Ryan O'Neal Arrested

Hollywood actor Ryan O'Neal has been arrested in California for allegedly assaulting his son Griffin.
The star was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm after police were called to his Malibu home.

The 65-year-old actor was freed on bail after five hours in detention over what police called a "family dispute".

Griffin O'Neal, 42, was not hurt in the incident although a 22-year-old woman suffered injuries that were not gun-related.

Police said they had not yet determined how many shots were fired from the handgun.

Mr O'Neal's manager Neil Hassman claimed the actor was defending himself after his son began "wildly swinging a fireplace poker".

The dispute came after Ryan O'Neal, actress Farrah Fawcett and some friends returned from dinner to celebrate her birthday, Mr Hassman said in a statement to showbusiness programme The Insider.

"It is unfortunate that what should have been an internal family disagreement was escalated to the point that Ryan felt he had to defend himself from Griffin's aggressive, extremely menacing physical behaviour," he said.
