Battered Wife Syndrome????

Rihanna was reportedly scheduled to be one of the many surprise special performer at last night’s Academy Awards, but the New York Post reports that she pulled out following her alleged beating by boyfriend Chris Brown.

And while the bruised beauty understandly opted for a low-key 21st birthday last week, it appears Chris is trying to slime his way back into her life. In an attempt to woo her, the woman-beating crooner sent her a diamond bracelet and necklace as well as an iPod Touch.

A source tells the New York Daily News: “Chris called Rihanna to wish her a happy birthday. He’s absolutely trying to get back into her good graces. He knows he’s very much in the doghouse right now, and is doing everything he can to show her how sorry he is.”

So, is it working? Sadly, yes. Adds the insider: “Rihanna so wanted Chris with her on her big day, but obviously realizes why they can’t be together right now. But it’s becoming more and more clear that she can’t be without him.”
