To be Gay or Not
If you think you have what it takes to stump single, unsuspecting straight women, then GayDAR may be the show for you. The forthcoming reality series is now casting gay men who think they can convince husband-hungry gals that they dig chicks. Upon reading the show’s Craigslist posting, we couldn’t help but wonder if GayDAR is actually Lifetime’s new series Gay, Straight, or Taken. In any case, here’s the ad: “GayDAR is a new show that puts to test your ability to differentiate between who’s Gay and who’s Straight. We are looking for gay MEN between the ages of 21-35. You must be single, attractive, and have a very outgoing personality. We’re gonna set you in a straight dating situation and have you act straight while dating a single, straight, attractive girl. This is Reality TV but you will be acting as straight as possible. Your job is to not let the girl Know that you’re the gay guy in the show!!!” “Acting” as straight as possible? Is it us, or is this just another sad example of gay exploitation and stereotype reinforcement? Nevertheless, if you’re hard up for cash, the gig pays $500. And, really, how tough can it be to throw on a baseball cap and refrain from discussing how fierce BeyoncĂ© is for an hour?
