Xanadu On Broadway

The camp movie Xanadu will be remade as a musical and open at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre in May 2007, reports Variety.

Out playwright Douglas Carter Beane—currently enjoying Broadway success with his Hollywood satire The Little Dog Laughed—wrote the musical's book. If early reports are true, stage vet Jane Krakowski will portray Olivia Newton-John's Xanadu character, Kira, a Greek muse who helps a down-on-his-luck artist open a roller disco. Openly gay actor Cheyenne Jackson—who played Mark Bingham in this year's United 93—is a likely candidate for Sonny, the unlucky artist. It's also reported that Ben Vereen, who was part of an August 3 Xanadu reading, could take on Danny, Gene Kelly's character in the film.

Originally intended to open off-Broadway, Xanadu is being produced for the Great White Way by Rob Ahrens and Dan Vickery.
