No Meltdown For Alex Karev In "Grey's Anatomy" Season 6.... So Far

The cast lineup for season six of Grey's Anatomy is becoming clearer by the day.

Following on Marc Malkin's report last month that star T.R. Knight is leaving the series, a source confirms that Katherine Heigl "will be back."

But what's the official word from the show bosses and Heigl's people?

Reps for the hit ABC series and for Katherine Heigl both declined to comment.

Season five ended on a double-death cliffhanger, as Knight's character, George O'Malley, struggled to survive massive trauma inflicted by a bus accident, and Heigl's character, Izzie Stevens, endured life-threatening complications of her cancer treatment.

The split decision—Knight goes and Heigl stays—was telegraphed in the fifth season finale's episode-ending dream sequence, wherein Izzie seemed drawn back to the voices of the friends trying to save her life, while George seemed serenely ready to move into another phase of his existence.

Dr George O'Malley Is Dead

Multiple sources tell me that T.R. Knight will not be returning to Grey's Anatomy next season.

Knight's departure shouldn't come as too much of a shock...

Not only was George flatlining at the end of the season finale earlier this month, but the 36-year-old actor has reportedly wanted off the hit ABC series for quite some time.

I'm told that tension between Knight and show creator Shonda Rhimes has become unbearable for both.

"He hates her, and she hates him," one source said.

Knight, an original member of the Grey's cast, was said to have become increasingly frustrated by his character's lack of storyline and camera face time. In December, he asked to be let out of his contract.

Insiders tell me Knight has made no secret about George's demise. No word on any future projects for Knight, but at least now he's free to pursue other things.

Reps for Knight and ABC declined to comment.

Knight's best buddy Katherine Heigl is supposedly still waiting to learn her fate with Seattle Grace. As I was the first to report last July, Rhimes began contemplating an early death for Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens after Heigl took herself out of the running for last year's Emmys because, she complained, the writers failed to give her good enough material to work with.

Like George, Izzie was also flatlining at the end of the season finale.

Funny enough, Entertainment Weekly recently reported that Heigl will submit her name for Emmy consideration this year for her work as cancer-stricken Izzie.

Note to the cast and crew of Grey’s Anatomy: Katherine Heigl waits for no man.

According to a scoop from Star Magazine, the Emmy-winning actress was left livid earlier this month when she was forced to hang around the set of the hit ABC medical drama waiting for directors to shoot her scene.

“She seemed to be screaming at the director and crew members and everyone else, saying, ‘What the matter with you; learn how to do your job!’”

The tabloid snitch says Katherine’s tantrum went on for hours: “All day long she kept calling her agent, complaining about the incompetence on the set.”

“With the money she makes, you’d think she wouldn’t mind waiting around a few minutes until they needed her.”

“Katherine thinks she’s a huge star and is entitled to throw disruptive fits at the slightest provocation.”

Brain Tumor For Izzie????

This could just be a sick way to promote "Grey's Anatomy" so people will see if indeed Izzie will die.....

Unless that's what you want. Katherine Heigl may have finally done it. Someone on the inside at her popular show Grey's Anatomy is whispering that Heigl's character, Izzie, will get a brain tumor and possibly die in the upcoming season. “It’s their way of screwing with her," the insider says. "She won’t know whether she’s going to live or die.” Hah! ABC has only confirmed that her former costar Jeffrey Dean Morgan—who played a patient that she loved but sorta killed (right?)—will be back in the saddle for some episodes. The inside source says that he'll be appearing in Izzie's tumor-induced dreams/hallucinations. So yeah, she may have finally pissed off the showrunners enough to get once-and-for-all written off the show, which she seems, foolishly, to be gunning for. I mean what other reason could she possibly have to publicly trash the writers (saying that their writing for her character made her unworthy of Emmy consideration)? You know, other than rampant unchecked ego. Now, I'm sure that if the character passes on, the decision will be chalked up to gentle creative differences. But we'll know the truth: it was revenge.

As was suggested earlier, the writers may have been trying to sabotage Heigl's role on the show for some time now, making Izzie as shrill and whiny as Heigl herself. She's seemed pissy and ungrateful since she made big in Knocked Up, a movie that owes most of its success to Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen (and the rest of their pals). After that she jumped way up into a new pay grade, starred in the semi-hit 27 Dresses, and has become a tabloid fixture. It even helped her win an Emmy for Grey's Anatomy. (All this after starring in one of the lowest-grossing movies of all time only a few years prior). If she then felt totally cool about criticizing the movie (perhaps fairly, if not tactfully or professionally) in Vanity Fair, that can't have made the Grey's writers feel terribly secure about what she'd say about them.

And then, through utter speculation and nothing else, we can imagine that she breezed her way onto the Grey's set after all of this hoopla and felt so totally beyond this little show. But instead of buckling down and doing her work (for which she is paid an obscene amount of money) and hoping they'd kindly give her an early release, Heigl chose to try to bitch her way out of her seven year contract. And it seems like the producers may finally be acquiescing. Which, actually, is a bit disappointing (and not just because there are so many more interesting ways to kill off the Izzie character). As a commenter on IMDB suggests, wouldn't it be even better, even crueler to just bury her for the next three years? Don't let her off for movies, demand she be there every day, etc. Basically a prison sentence versus the death penalty.

I mean, I've always been against the death penalty. Though maybe it's death no matter what. Is anyone really going to want to hire her after all of this? For Ms. Heigl, this may prove to be something of a Pyrrhic victory.

Update: An ABC exec says Heigl will be on for the full season. Doesn't mean she won't die in the end, though.

The disgruntled Grey’s Anatomy star was snapped jamming to her iPod while rocking a colourful bikini at her Los Feliz home.

Katherine is coming off a week of highs and lows. After offering up “an ungrateful slap in the face” to the writers of her hit ABC show (when she withdrew her name from the Emmy race claiming she was “not given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination), the down and out actress headed for the border for a sun-filled vacay in Mexico with hubby Josh Kelley.

Now that she’s back at home, the question is: What will Grey’s writers do to seek vengence on the ungracious actress? Put her into a coma for the entire season? Write her off completely? The possibilities are endless!

Grey's Anatomy Should Bring Back TR Knight Or Else......

NEW YORK, NY (May 22, 2007) -- Access caught up with "Grey's Anatomy" star T.R. Knight last night as he was co-hosting the 52nd annual OBIE awards (honoring achievements in the off-Broadway stage) in New York City , when he admitted that he was unsure if he would be returning to "Grey's" next season.

"I literally don't know," he said. "It would be nice to know if I'm supposed to report back soon."

With his character's fate up in the air after failing his intern test in the medical drama's season finale, along with rumors of unease on the set due to September's "homophobic slur" incident with castmate Isaiah Washington, fans are anxious about whether Knight will return.

Knight told Access that he got a lot of calls from friends after the finale, wanting to know if he will be back. He thinks the producers haven't told him because actors have big mouths and would tell everyone, but that doesn't alleviate his anxiety.

"If you're supposed to report back to work in a month and a half, I would really like to know that," he remarked, adding, "because I would like to know if I can shave my head."

Knight, known for coloring his hair vibrant colors from time to time, was photographed last week with a bright red head of hair. It was back to its natural shade of brown, however, for last night's awards presentation.

They better bring him back or else....Much as I love Katherine Heigl, I would start a petition for people to stop watching the show.

USA Today reports:

LOS ANGELES — Receiving a prolonged standing ovation, Grey's Anatomy's T.R. Knight was nearly brought to tears on the Kodak Theatre stage as he opened Saturday's 18th annual GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Awards (airing on LOGO Saturday at 9 p.m. ET).

"I am angry...very angry at the inequality that we face every day," said Knight, who acknowledged his homosexuality in October after being called a slur by castmate Isaiah Washington. "I hope I can turn my anger into action. One of those actions is me being here tonight."

But earlier on the red carpet, Knight was upbeat and laughing over his Grey's character, George, hooking up with Izzie, played by his pal and vocal supporter Katherine Heigl. "It was our characters who slept together, not us," clarified Knight. "Her fiancé wouldn't be happy with me otherwise."

The verbal slugfest between Grey's Anatomy's Katherine Heigl and the show's producers has entered a new round, with Heigl zinging her bosses for going public on their salary dispute.

"I am embarrassed that this has become a public matter and disappointed that Touchstone felt it necessary to divulge private employment information," Heigl, 28, said in a statement Thursday.

"I had hoped I would be able to deal with this issue confidentially with my bosses. I dropped out of the renegotiation simply because I wanted to treat myself with the respect I was not getting from them."

But Grey's fans will be happy to know that Heigl, who plays Izzie Stevens on the ABC hit, still loves her character. "No matter how unhappy I am about their decision to respond to this publicly, I continue to be passionate about and committed to this character," she said.

The actress dropped out of contract talks on Tuesday, a well-placed source told PEOPLE at the time, explaining: "Katie is disappointed and hurt that Touchstone doesn't value her as much as her other costars, especially Sandra Oh and Isaiah Washington."

In response, ABC Television said in a statement Wednesday that Heigl wasn't going anywhere: "We have a longterm contract to ensure she'll be with the show for several years to come."

The statement also said that producers had offered Heigl a significantly higher pay package and were "surprised" to see negative press coverage of their gesture.

Dr. McBigot To Be Fired?

E! Online Kristin Veitch reports:

Isaiah Washington may be on his way out.

I just received word from a highly placed source within the Touchstone/ABC family that ABC and Disney executives are currently considering the option of firing Isaiah Washington from Grey's Anatomy, effective immediately, without having him appear in any kind of farewell episode.

According to this reliable source, if the network does follow through with this option, the producers are likely to run a full-screen announcement at the beginning of the first Burke-less episode that announces Isaiah Washington is no longer part of the show.

I'm also told by various sources that the loss of Preston Burke is not an easy task for Grey's writing staff to deal with, given that he has a major storyline (including a life-changing event) coming in the next few episodes that airs during February sweeps. Those episodes have already been shot.

Dr McBigot To Meet With GLAAD

Grey's Anatomy star Isaiah Washington has agreed to meet with Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) executive director Kevin Jennings this afternoon in Los Angeles to discuss ways Washington can team with GLSEN to ensure America's youth understand the power of anti-gay slurs like the one Washington recently used to refer to fellow "Grey's" star T.R. Knight.

Today marks the beginning of GLSEN's "No Name-Calling Week" in schools nationwide. GLSEN commends ABC and Washington for recognizing the harm of Washington's use of the word "faggot" and reaching out to GLSEN to turn an unfortunate situation into an opportunity to open a dialogue with America's youth.

Fittingly, the meeting takes place on the first day of "No Name-Calling Week." The fourth-annual "No Name-Calling Week" is a time for educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds.

Isaiah Washington may have finally issued a public apology for his homophobic rhetoric regarding Grey's Anatomy castmate T.R. Knight, but it certainly doesn’t end there.

A well-placed source just told me that Washington will have a face-to-face sit down with the entire Grey’s cast tomorrow where his coworkers plan to tell him how they feel about his behavior.

"It’s a meeting so he can hear them all out," my source says. "And it will go on as long as it needs to go."

My source says ABC executives are not expected to attend.

Meanwhile, it's no surprise that the battle is on to land the first post-apology interview with Washington. And if and when that happens, count on it being with an ABC news outlet.

Chances are it will come down to either Barbara Walters or Diane Sawyer, and my source predicts that Sawyer will score. "If he does go on TV, don’t be surprised if he ends up on Good Morning America," my source says. "But he’s not doing anything until this is all straightened out."

Washington’s press room denial also infuriated Grey’s cast member Katherine Heigl, who reproached her costar during an interview with Access Hollywood Monday night.

"I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period.

I’m sorry, that did not need to be said, I’m not okay with it." "I have no idea what it was, I just find it hurtful,” she told Access.

“I don’t think he (Washington) means it the way he comes off… But, T.R. is my best friend. I will throw down for that kid. I will beat you up. I will use every ounce of energy I have to take you down if you hurt his feelings."

T.R. Knight says hearing Isaiah Washington call him a "faggot" on the set of Grey's Anatomy gave him the courage to come out of the closet – and that he's speechless that Washington on Monday denied using the word.

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres set to air Wednesday, Knight says something changed inside him when he overheard an argument in October between Washington and Grey's co-star Patrick Dempsey during which Washington used the slur.

"It's an awesome word, isn't it?" the 33-year-old actor tells DeGeneres sarcastically. "I've never been called that to my face. So I think when that happened, something shifted, and it became bigger than myself."

Shortly after the dustup, Knight confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE that he is gay – the kind of announcement he says isn't his style, but that he felt was necessary.

"I was under no delusions," he says. "My friends on the set knew. We talked about it. Publicly it's not my thing to call up PEOPLE magazine and be like, 'Hey, you want to know something about me?' ... I could've just let it slide and not said anything, but it became important. It became important to make the statement."

In the Golden Globe press room on Monday night, Washington denied using the slur. "No, I did not call T.R. a faggot," he told Access Hollywood. "Never happened, never happened."

That statement drew a sharp rebuke from another Grey's co-star, Katherine Heigl, who said Washington "needs to just not speak in public." And Knight tells DeGeneres he doesn't know what to make of the denial.

"I don't know what to say, really, about that," he says.

Knight also thanks DeGeneres for having the courage to come out as a lesbian 10 years ago. "It just made all the difference in the world," he says.

Beauty Is Such A Superficial Thing

Katherine Heigl has been on camera since she was 9 years old. But the flashbulbs have never been brighter than they are now that she stars on the hit ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy."

The 27-year-old blonde beauty, who plays Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, said she's still adjusting to the challenges of overnight fame. But she's digging the perks: One acting gig helped Heigl find her fiance, singer-songwriter Josh Kelley. She was hired to star in his music video, and the two ended up engaged.

Kelley was by Heigl's side when she was feted recently by Cosmopolitan magazine. Editor Kate White hosted an intimate dinner for Heigl to celebrate her appearance on the December issue of Cosmopolitan. The actress' manager mom and TV co-stars T.R. Knight and Kate Walsh were also on hand to toast Heigl's success.

Later, she took time out to talk with The Associated Press about the pressures and pleasures of celebrity.

Q: What's it like to become instantly famous?

KATHERINE HEIGL: It's weird. I've been doing this for so long and I always imagined what it might be like to have this success, but you can't really know what it will be like. The most pivotal point was at the "upfronts" (where broadcasters present programs to advertisers) in New York last year. People would come up to me and tell me how much they loved the show, and New Yorkers just don't do that! The excitement for the show was just unbelievable. I've been waiting 15 years for this kind of success and I'm just so grateful and really thrilled. It's definitely overwhelming at times.

Q: Is there a downside?

HEIGL: With all the magazines, there's so much access into people's personal lives. You feel watched all the time and it feels like you can't be yourself, like you can't go to the grocery store unless you're wearing a cute outfit and look perfect. But I feel like I'm learning how to live with it and be myself regardless of judgment or criticism. All I really care about are the people I love. It is overwhelming. I think it takes experience.

Q: What's it like to see yourself on the cover of Cosmopolitan?

HEIGL: This is huge for me. I've always read Cosmo and loved the covers, the fashion spreads and the sex advice. It feels sort of like an out-of-body experience, like it's happening to someone else.

Q: What do you think "Grey's Anatomy" says to women?

HEIGL: I'm really grateful because the character I play is smart and ambitious. And not ambitious in a bad way, getting ahead at the expense of someone else. She's ambitious in her own self, pushing herself to be her best. The women on this show are independent, strong and career-driven. They're so supportive of one another, and that's an important message to put out into the world today. Every woman is an individual, interesting and inspired in her own right. I think they really push that theory in this show and I love that. I'm proud of that.

Q: Your character, who modeled lingerie to finance her medical training, struggles with the notion of beauty. How do you feel about it?

HEIGL: It's an interesting line to toe. I understand the desire and the need to look and be perfect in this industry. But I'm a real woman, a real size ... well I don't even know what size I am. Between 4 and 6, depending on the day.

I am not perfect. I have my moments where I feel sexy and healthy, and then I have days when I just want to put on my sweats and not talk to anyone. Beauty is such a superficial thing. People only see your exterior and there's so much room for misjudging people based on how they look. All these beautiful, perfect people do not have beautiful, perfect lives. All these beautiful celebrities have the same pain and turmoil in their lives as I do. I think it's more important to be my personal best and put that out there.

Q: What's a typical day like for you?

HEIGL: Usually on Mondays our call time is 6 a.m. I live five minutes from work, so I'll wake up at 10 (minutes) to 6. Then I'll spend five, 12 to 14 hours on the set. The call times get progressively later during the week. Last night I worked until 2:30 a.m.

Q: How do you unwind when you're not working?

HEIGL: My life is either overwhelming or totally underwhelming. I'll have really busy weeks with work, photo shoots and interviews, and then I'll have a week where I'm not working that much. I have these big couches at home, so I can have my four dogs on my lap while I read a book. I knit a lot.

When Josh is around, I want to spend time with him because we don't get to spend a lot of time together. We'll have a lazy, easygoing breakfast out, go to the movies, or go to a bar and have a drink. I don't go to a lot of clubs or concerts. Of course I go to his concerts! But otherwise it's calm stuff. I just like it to be relaxed.
