One Of The Greatest American Actress Speaks

Meryl Streep once had to sleep rough in London.

Before she made it big in Hollywood, the 59-year-old actress spent the night in Green Park because she couldn't afford to stay in a hotel or hostel.

Meryl, who was 20 at the time, said: "On my very, very first trip to London I went around busking to earn a few pennies to afford some food and overnight accommodation. One night, when I hadn't made enough, I actually slept in the open in Green Park under a tree."

Meryl insists the grounding experience made her determined to make a success of her career.

She added to Closer magazine: "The view from the park was of the Ritz hotel, and I vowed to myself that night that I was going to stay there one day ? and I have."

Meryl - who is often referred to as the finest actress of her generation - also says she remains down-to-earth by doing her own chores.

She explained: "You can't possibly get spoiled if you do your own ironing and get the station wagon out to go into town to get the weekly groceries."

Meryl Streep To Quit Hollywood?

The 57-year-old star is tired of Tinseltown's inability to provide good parts for older actresses, and insists she will walk away from acting unless the situation changes.
Streep, who played a draconian fashion editor in 'The Devil Wears Prada', is quoted by Britain's Daily Express newspaper as saying: "I have seriously thought about giving up unless there are roles available that do not depict women of my age as either dotty or horrible." Streep is not the only older actress to hit out against ageism in Hollywood.

Demi Moore recently spoke out against the lack of roles available to actresses 40 and over. Demi, 44, said: "For many female actors who turn 40 it means the end of their career, its time to retire. There aren't that many good roles for women over 40.

"A lot of them don't have much substance, other than being someone's mother or wife. If we are told we are not valuable once we hit 30 it is a problem."

Winslet Proposes To Streep

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Kate Winslet once asked Meryl Streep if she could French-kiss her.

'The Holiday' actress was so exited to meet her idol at a recent awards ceremony she accidentally blurted out the embarrassing offer.

Winslet told In Style magazine: "I went up to her and said, 'Oh my God, I love you so much, I would happily tongue-kiss you right now!'"

The 31-year-old actress admits her hasty comments often annoy her husband, film director Sam Mendez.

She explained: "Doing things on a whim, taking risks - I definitely have that side. It drives Sam mad."

Winslet admits her brave nature also plays a big part when she is choosing film roles.

She said: "When I choose a role, it's to try something different. I look back over the past decade and think, 'God, I've had these wild opportunities to try so many outrageous things.'"

No Old Women In Hollywood

Actress Meryl Streep says the difficulty facing many older women in Hollywood is based in part on male film studio heads.

'The Devil Wears Prada' actress said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that due to the fantasy-fulfillment behind the film industry, older females are typically left with limited roles to choose from.

'Movies are people`s fantasies,' the 57-year-old actress said. 'Most of the people who run studios are men. It`s not their fantasy, seeing their first wife up there. Their fantasy is seeing somebody more like their second or third wives.'

While Streep has met with success in 2006 with 'Prada' and 'A Prairie Home Companion,' the actress explained that the climate in Hollywood nearly ended both productions.

'Well, `Prairie` almost lost its funding two days before we went to shoot. And `Prada` ran up against some problems about whether it was marketable,' Streep said.

'With movie vehicles with women or older women in prominent positions on the one-sheet,' she added in the interview with the paper, 'it`s not ever anything that isn`t completely terrifying and shaky, even in the best of circumstances.'
